My Applique Project No.2

Hi everyone.

Given the date I should say Happy Valentines Day. 

Applique Project No. 2 is very exciting because it is finished!!!!  I have sewn it this year so it qualifies. It is the central panel of Di Ford's "Phebe Quilt".

Well the applique bit is done.  I have half of the stars for the borders made, but something tells me it will be quite a while before another major section of this quilt is finished.

I think the sheep are my favourite on this one.  I'm particularly pleased with the ears.

We had two beautiful Customer Quilts in the shop this week.

This Miriam's quilt using the beautiful Dutch reproduction fabrics from Den Haan & Wagonmarkers.  Their web-site is www.dutchfabrics.nl if you would like to take a look.

Then we have Ann's wonderful 1930's Tree of Life top.  This is a 1930's classic pattern and one of my favourites.  Yes I have always said, "I would like to make that one day", so thank you Anne for showing it to us.  Just look at all the leaves.

 

We have some photos of Suzy Miller's first class for the year.  Starting off with her latest masterpiece.  Just love the whirly gigs, and yes that is a Den Haan & Wagonmarker's chintz panel.

New Kaffe Fassett Fabrics - Sneek Peek

One of my favourite fabric wholesalers came to visit today.  He came bearing the 90 odd new Kaffe Fassett, Brandon Mabley and Philip Jacobs prints in their first release for 2012.  They are all (except one pattern that we decided we didn't need) coming to Quiltsmith.  Take a peek at three new designs below.  There are more colourways than the ones shown.

They are yummy. 

Kaffe is re-releasing his fabulous Cabbage Rose design that has been discontinued for years. 

The fabrics are due for delivery end of February early March.  We will send out a post when they have arrived.

In the meantime, we have had a large delivery of Kaffe replacement fabrics. 

The shelves are full, not sure where we are going to put the new designs, but we will work it out on the day.

My Applique Project No. 1

As Summer School draws to a close, lets take a peek at Lynne Alchin's Summer Baskets quilt class day two.

This is the class I did this year and you will see I'm already far behind the rest of the class.  Just as well as I'm not naming any finishing dates for the quilts in my year of applique.

Just have a look at how the same quilt can look soooo different, and see how they grow.

 

This one is mine, and it is very much under construction.  This is my Applique Project No. 1.

Then for the puzzle lovers, we had Linda Butcher's Celtic Knot workshop.

This looked like a bit of concentration was required.

Dutch Quilts

An Moonen and Annette Gero, thank you so much for the wonderful lecture on the history of Dutch quilts.  An Moonen, the author of "A History of Dutch Quilts", is regarded as the person who brought European Quilts to the world.  I knew we were in for something different when An showed us the first recorded mention of "quilts".  It is a Roman word "Culits" and originally meant a mattress, but some time during the dark ages became the bed covering we are familiar with.  To learn more you need to see An's book.  We will be getting more in stock shortly.

Here are some crowd shots.  The Petra Prins Dutch Fabric "Josephine" was liked.  See the pile up on the table, that is Josephine, or what's left of it.  Yes everyone was locked in.

There was a lot to discuss.  I wish An well on her tour of New Zealand and then she is back in Melbourne.  If you get the chance to see her lecture I would grab it.

What's happened in Summer School.  We had Lisa Walton's Candy Floss quilt.  This is class all about fabric fusing.  It was fun.

The Delivery Trucks are Arriving

Well its a new year and lets show you some of our first fabrics for 2012.

"Josephine" by Petra Prins for Windham Fabrics, beautiful reproduction 1800's Dutch fabrics.

This is the first fabric Collection by Petra Prins, who is the author of the very popular "Treasures from Holland" book.  These fabrics are perfect for the quilts in her book.

"Haven" by Anna Griffin.  Anna has started her own fabric design house, just called Anna Griffin Fabrics.  Stay tuned for lots of new fabrics from Anna.

I just love this new Collection from the V&A Museum, its called "Benedictus".  I'm not sure of its date, could be anywhere from 1920s to 1950's.  The colours are wild, and the peacocks magnificent.  There are three fabrics in each colourway.

Now for a Summer School update.

Day 2 of Anne Sommerlad's Antique Nine Patch.  Looking very busy.

Not so very antique.

Here's Sharon's (who was in the class) quilt from Summer School last year.  Her version of Liz Pinczewski's, No Tears Foundation Piecing quilt.  Looks good.

Then we have Kim Bradley's, Fresh Flowers class yesterday.  This class wins the busy award so far for Summer School.  Everybody jumped right in and started sewing.

Pene dropped into the shop to show us her completed Flower Garden top.  She was in our Kim Mclean Workshop last February.    I think it is just beautiful.  This is one of the quilts on my

To Do list this year.
