About the Floods and quilt donations

We have had word from The Quilter's Guild of NSW about "Flood Quilts".  This is what is happening.

The Guild is asking for donations of quilts for flood victims.  The preferred sizes range from 1m x 1.5m to 1.2m x 1.8m.  But any size is OK.

They are also asking for donations of the following:-

Quilt tops not yet quilted
Cotton quilting fabrics for tops and backs
Cotton wadding to make and finish quilts
Quilting books and magazines in good condition

The Guild has many affiliated groups and sponsoring businesses in affected areas.  As they live and work in these areas, the Guild is using this network to assess the need for donations.

The Guild is asking for these donations, as well as any financial contributions, to be posted to:-

Queensland Quilters Inc, GPO 2841, Brisbane QLD 4001

There will not be a centralised drop off point for these quilts , the cost of postage is part of your donation.

However you can deliver donations to the next Guild meeting on 12 February at Burwood RSL.

More Summer School

Well the heat has almost overcome us today, but I guess we are all in the same hot & sweaty boat. 

We had day two of Sue Ross's Double Wedding Ring with a Twist today. Some of Marian's blocks are shown below, together with five of her Grandma's Star blocks.

We have places available in Sue's Sunday class at the moment.  Just give the shop a call if you would like more information.

Marian, who is astoundingly prolific, also produced her one and a quarter blocks from Liz's No Tears Foundation Piecing summer school class a few weeks ago. Beautiful, don't you think?

Summer School - Antique Quilts and Other Bits and Pieces

Our summer school is going along well and we have been lucky with the heat this year.  Yes, it has been humid in Sydney town, but we have been blessed with a lovely breeze most days which makes it all that more bearable. 

Lynne Alchin's French Generals Mistress day one went well with Lynne's usual wonderful and generous class style.  Her quilt was a delight to see.  The ladies have a bit of homework to do for day two coming up this Saturday.

Anne Sommerlad's reversible wrap skirt class was a lot of fun.  Some ladies finished theirs and others had not sewn before.  A finished result being 'modelled'!

No...it is not a massive pieced circle happening here...or giant dresden plate of sorts...it's the wrap skirt in progress. 

We were very lucky to have Judy Newman's beautiful Museum Medallion quilt dropped off recently. (Thanks Jenny!)  It looks gorgeous on our pink wall.  Come and see it if you can...hand quilted and a great use of fabrics as well as a scrappy pieced backing.  We have the patterns in stock at the moment.

Summer School Class One and the Floods

The floods, what can we say but our hearts go out to everyone effected.  The phone here is running hot with people volunteering to donate quilts, as we were the collection point for the Victorian Bushfire Quilts.

Yes we will be a collection point but not yet.  We are working in conjunction with the NSW Quilter's Guild, and once we have worked out the logistics of who will receive the quilts and transport etc.  Please do not bring in any quilts at the moment.  We will  let you know what is happening.  We will post on the blog and our web-site what you can do.  If you would like to start gathering or making, please do.  We will only be accepting fully completed quilts so they can be given directly to victims.

Hello to all. 

Everyone at Quiltsmith sends our thoughts to all our customers effected by the flooding in Queensland and New South Wales.  We hope you are all safe, and that this ends quickly.

I thought it was about time I posted a blog.  I am overcoming my techno inadequacies and launching into the world of blogs.  So going forward Lindy, Brenda and I will be posting blogs. 

The shop opened with a bang yesterday.  Pam and Lindy were inundated with eager customers desperate for their fabric fix or that piece they were just short of over the break.  It was good to see you all.

I stumbled on Barbara Brackman's new blog www.civilwarquilts.blogspot.com which is well worth a visit.  She is publishing a block a week, with a heap of historical information about each block.  I have decided to make the blocks, just as a fun exercise and to use up a smidgen of the reproduction fabrics I have squirreled away.  I  have challenged the staff to join me. Janet and I have finished our first blocks.

This is my Catch Me If You Can block.  I thought a bit about a colour scheme for the blocks and decided, no it's scrappy all the way.  I will avoid using dead white fabrics, so shirting prints etc must have a touch of cream.

If any of you would like to take up the challenge as well, email us photos of your finished blocks and we will put a selection on the blog.  Just so you can see how we all interpreted fabrics and blocks differently.

New in the shop is Barbara Brackman's new Morris Tapestry Collection.  This is some of the nicest Morris fabrics we have seen.

We still have tickets available in the the Kaffe Fassett and Kim Mclean workshops and the lecture with Kaffe and Brandon.  Just give the shop a call if you are interested.  We have people coming from Darwin and Melbourne!
